Ausangate is located 100 km southeast of Cusco, this trek is great to discover an unknown aspect of Peru, along the way travellers will see andean uplift formed by granits, the hanging glaciers and glacial erosional valleys, rocky formation with singular colors and the limestone forests. The region represents one of the last pastoralist societies in the world. Travellers can enjoy great views at crystalline lakes and nearby mountains.
DAY 1: CUSCO – TINKI
We leave Cusco and travel by bus to the town of T’inki (3 800 mt / 12464 ft.). On the way we stop in Urcos, where we may visit a beautiful lake with the same name, then we will keep on going and pass the town of Cattca, an agricultural and cattle raising community where we can appreciate spectacular views and finally we will go through Ocongate. After 6 hr. drive, we arrive at T’inki, where we will spend the night in a local lodge.
DAY 2: T’INKI – UPIS
After breakfast, we leave T’inki initiating a slight climb that goes through the highlands and areas with little vegetation. After 4 hr. of trek, we will take our lunch adn a little break, admiring the amazing mountains around us. Later, we continue walking for 2.30 hr. to reach our campsite at Upis (4 400 mt. / 14432 ft. ) from this point, we may appreciate fabulous views of all the snow peaks in the area. We will camp directly in front of the Ausangate Mountain.
DAY 3: UPIS – AUSANGATE QOCHA
Early in the morning we will have a good breakfast surrounded by a breathtaking landscape, then we´ll continue ascending during 2 hrs. to reach the pass of Arapa (4 850 mt / 15908 ft.), crossing an area of falcons, vizcachas and other andean animals. This area also boasts three beautiful lakes with red, green, and turquoise tones (Pukaqocha, Hatun Pukaqocha, and Q’omerqocha). After lunch, we will continue the long and slow ascent, that will take us 2 hr., to the second mountain pass, Apuchata (4 900 mt. / 16072 ft.), from here we will descend for 30 min. towards our campsite at Ausangateqocha.
DAY 4: AUSANGATEQOCHA – QAMPA
We´ll depart early, after eating breakfast to climb during 3 hrs. towards the 3rd mountain pass called Palomani (5 200 mt. / 17056 ft.), this is the highest part of the trip, from here we will descend for 2 hr. going through areas of Camelidaes until reaching Pampacancha (4 050 mt. / 13284 ft.). From here we follow an uphill trail until that lead us to our camp site in Q’ampa.
DAY 5: QAMPA – PACCHANTA
We will start this journey climbing for 2 hr. until reaching Q’ampa mountain pass (5 000 mt. / 16400 ft.), where we may have the chance to spot the andean deer. From here we descend for 5 hr. towards the lagoon of Q’omerqocha and we will finally arrive at Pacchanta (4 100 mt. / 13448 ft.). This is a little isolated community with hot springs where we can enjoy a relaxing dip. Here we will camp and spend our night.
DAY 6: PACCHANTA – T’INKI – CUSCO
After eating breakfast, we leave Phaqchanta and walk back to T’inki, this trek will take us 2 hr. aprox. Once in T’inki, we´ll return by private transportation to Cusco arriving at night.
